Who this is for

Three ways into plant hire

ROUTE A

Starting from scratch

You know machines or construction but have never run a hire business. Begin with How to start and the startup costs.

ROUTE B

Contractor adding a hire fleet

Your own kit already sits idle between jobs. Read how to price plant hire and hire terms before renting it out.

ROUTE C

Small hire firm growing

You have a few machines and want more utilisation and less admin. Start with booking systems and finding customers.

Do this first

Write your one-line niche before you buy a machine

Pick one area and one fleet category, then name the three customer types most likely to hire it and why they'd switch to you. The startup checklist walks you through it.

FAQs

Before you begin

Is plant hire a good business to start?
It can be, if you start narrow. Plant hire is capital-heavy and margins depend on utilisation, so the firms that do well usually pick one area and one fleet category, prove demand with real customers, and grow only when machines are earning. Read how to start a plant hire business.
How much money do I need to start a plant hire company?
A small self-drive fleet of two to four used machines, a trailer and a tow vehicle is commonly financed, but you still need cash for deposits, VAT, insurance and three months of running costs. Our startup cost guide has a worked budget you can adapt.
Do I need qualifications to run a plant hire company?
There is no licence to run a hire company itself, but you need competent people for the work you do: operator competence for operated hire, safe loading and transport, and inspection regimes such as PUWER and LOLER. You may also need a goods vehicle operator's licence for delivery vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
Who writes this guide?
The Plant Hire Start-Up Guide is run by the team behind Plant Hire Finance, PlantClassifieds and Rental Desk Pro, with more than 25 years in plant hire. We say so wherever we mention those services.
